Internet-based Software To Measure Knowledge
Our On-line Diagnostic Testing System
is designed to offer a state-of-the art tool for measuring language
proficiency. The testing system, relying on the various types of exercises
used in language teaching, is capable of measuring several language skills and
is equally suitable for adaptive (self-assessing), placement (defining the
right level) and cognitive (checking the acquired knowledge) testing. The
testing process is built on the completion of interactive tasks, during which
any multimedia component (sound, image, video, animation) can be used. The
results can be stored in a data base and they can be made accessible for
users. The test system can be flexibly adapted to users’ needs and can also be
used for other purposes than measuring language proficiency.
Advantages:
- saving manpower, flexible execution of work
- correction by software, rapid feedback
- efficient use in case of scattered
population
- user-friendly (after correction students may have a look at their
mistakes)
- can be used both from a distance (via Internet) and in the local network
The Structure of the Framework System (software) of
Diagnostic Testing:
|
Interface of the Student
(after registration it can be used from outside via Internet ) |
Administration Interface of the Institution
(accessible via Internet from anywhere but only for internal users) |
|
Registration |
Testing the task database (all
the tasks) |
|
Completing the tests
|
Modifying institutional access (password, e-mail
account) |
|
Viewing the task sheets
afterwards |
Registration (entering new users or approving
individual registrations), deleting users |
|
Printing out the corrected task
sheets |
Granting and withdrawing access right (credit) to
testing |
|
|
Assessing the task sheets (and partly their
correction by teachers) |
|
|
Placement of the applicants and notification of the
placement |
The process of testing:
- Registration (by students themselves or by
the institution’s employees), notification of it is sent by e-mail.
- Granting credit (access right to testing), notification of it is sent by
e-mail
- Starting off testing (log in, selecting the level, completing the tasks)
- The on-line task sheets are assessed by teachers, notification of it is
sent with the suggestion for placement.
- Applicants may have a look at their task sheets afterwards
- After the testing has ended, students can be deleted from the system (or
archived).
Professional Background to Diagnostic Testing:
- It is an up-to-date type of testing (it does not only test grammar
and lexical knowledge)
- Three of the four basic language skills (oral comprehension, reading
comprehension, writing) and the level of grammar knowledge can be measured
on-line.
- Variability: the program (test engine) always selects from several
questions (their number can be increased further).
- Multimedia solutions (sound, image and text) can be used.
Correction
of Completed Tasks:
- All tasks but the essay type ones are assessed by the software.
- Essays are corrected and assessed by teachers but with the help of
on-line devices not requiring printing;
Results of the essays and other tasks are summed up by the software and
calculated in percentage.
Mode of
Operation:
- ASP service (fee-based on-line software use)
- Accounting: broken down by individuals (based on the number of tests
done) or calculated on a flat rate
